It’s Max, back at it with the food photography tips ! 🤙

Raised in the middle of the Alps between cows and lakes and educated at HEC Lausanne, Maxime Chatillon is both the person you want working on Growth/Business Development for your company, and the person you want to be travelling with (always taking pictures of everything) Yes! He’s a photographer. Before coming to Foodetective, Max studied Management at HEC Lausanne. He would also like you to know that he’s the inventor of the “Getting out of the friend zone“ perfect for — category and certainly the best Wing-Man you could have while going out.

So you know what gear to use (👉 https://medium.com/@foodetective/the-gear-you-need-for-food-photography-bc2d58b81cc1 ) to take gorgeous food pictures ( 👉 https://medium.com/@foodetective/food-photography-explained-a969e727de59 ) !

You’re left with all these mouth-watering pictures. What do you do now? 🤔

In this article we’ll talk about :

  1. One of the best app for editing
  2. How to edit them!

🚨 The goal here is to add slight touches to the original picture. If the picture isn’t great at first adding layers and layers of filters won’t help.

There are multiple apps to edit your pictures. It might be daunting not knowing where to start. Don’t worry, this will help:

I personally use “VSCO” ( https://vsco.co/store/app ) on my phone 📱. It’s quick, straight forward and has all the features you need. I also do additional changes or light touches on “Snapseed” (https://itunes.apple.com/ch/app/snapseed/id439438619?l=fr&mt=8 ). Today we’ll only use VSCO ! 🖖

How to edit pictures !

We even set ourselves a challenge: We have 20 minutes to get out of the office, eat a bagel, shoot it and edit it on our phones before our next meeting !

3,2,1 GO ⏳

It’s 12:40, we head outside, walk a few minutes and arrive at @threekidsbagel in Geneva! 🥪 (no bagel emoji…) 12:44 ! We order three different bagels. We have no time to get fancy during the photo shoot.

Here are the unedited pictures we took:

With not a lot of time on our hands we shoot in the bagel-shop but try to vary the shoots !

The First thing I do is play around with the different filters in VSCO. Most of them are free. They’re good enough to use, however if you are picky you can pay to unlock more. 👉 Here I chose Kodak Portra 160VC.

The difference is very subtle. It’s hard to see here but it’s just to give a little pop to the image and give it more contrast.

Then I go to the settings tab. I only use a few and adjust them to my liking. For this picture I adjusted the contrast and saturation (to give the food more colour), as well as sharpening, vignetting ( to focus more on the bagel ) and cropped the picture a little bit ( it was too wide for my liking).

Image on the left is UNEDITED and on the one on the right is EDITED.

Minimal changes for a good result ! 12:48 One image down two to go !

To speed up the process I use the “copy and paste edit” feature in VSCO. The two pictures were taken at the same spot with the same light. The edits I made for the first one should work for the second one.

After hitting “Paste Edits” I see the picture is a bit too dark so I just increase the brightness.

Quick and effective edit ! It’s now 12:50. Last one to go ! 🏎💨

I use the same technique ( for the same reasons ) for the final image: copy and paste.

I just change the filter intensity and crop the picture a little bit ! That’s it.

Edited picture on the right.

Boom 12:51 ! 3 pictures edited and ready for the gram ! We even have time to eat a quick dessert before heading back 😋🍪

In conclusion, it’s possible to use solely a phone to edit and post your food pictures with a great result. In this case, we were a bit in a rush but by taking more time to shoot and tweaking a bit more you’ll have even better results !

That’s all from us folks 🤙 Thank you for reading this article 💌

See you next week for another article !

By registering on Foodetective, you’ll become two things: Smarter than the guys next you (unless he’s registered) and the person that people like to hang out with when looking for restaurants, bars and secret spots. (I’m just saying).
